How did Submarines and Submarine Launched Ballistic Missiles (SLBMs) contribute to deterrence? How did Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs) contribute to deterrence? What was the Titan II accident at Damascus\, AR? What was ?alert?? When did it end and why? What did we accomplish on our Flying training missions? How would we go to war? All of my 20+ years in the US Air Force were spent in the Strategic Air Command (SAC) at the height of the Cold War. SAC?s motto was ?Peace is our profession.? I was a B-52 pilot and ?fought? the Cold War during my training missions and performing alert duty. While I did drop bombs in Southeast Asia\, my primary focus was deterrence. The peace was kept through the treat of the use of nuclear weapons. I?ll briefly cover a number of topics that will inform you of some of the more intimate behind-the-scene details of the Cold War.
