With a nod to NCAA?s March Madness basketball tournament, University of Colorado Health in northern Colorado is hosting a series of free men?s health awareness happy hours called March MAN-ness?to emphasize the importance of disease prevention and early detection for men, a group that typically avoids health checkups. Men frequently avoid visiting the doctor even though statistics show that mortality rates decline when they take an active role in their own health. We are hosting these happy hours in locations, such as breweries and sports arenas, that create a level of comfort for men to ask questions about often ignored topics like prostate, heart and colon health. March MAN-ness will feature complimentary happy hour thanks to sponsors like Grimm Brothers, trivia and feats-of-strength competitions. ? Loveland, Mon. 3/3, Rialto Theatre, beer sponsored by Grimm Brothers, with special guests hockey legend Ralph Backstrom and Colorado Eagles players. Emcee Scott James radio host on Big Country 97.9. ? Last year the event was so popular we had to turn folks away. Space is limited so register now at marchmanness.org Many men wait until they are sick or in pain to see the doctor. Avoidance often occurs for a number of reasons. Common explanations are that it?s embarrassing or inconvenient. Some feel that they?re already healthy, while others are afraid of the exam and possible results. Any man or woman 21 and older is welcome to attend. The information presented will be most relevant for men 35 and older, around the age when many screenings are recommended. What to expect? ? Think bar trivia meets push-up contest meets a fun night out with friends while getting some useful health information. ? Free beer, food, pint glass and a game plan to help attendees play a more active role in their own health. ? These events not about slapping wrists and lecturing people about going to the doctor. ? The events are designed to be fun and competitive. We encourage attendees bring teams as there are some great prizes. They?ll compete for CSU basketball tickets, Colorado Eagles season tickets and autographed Eagles jerseys. They?ll get a chance to hear from and talk to primary care, oncology, cardiology, and urology, four medical areas where men?s lives are most impacted. Attendees will: ? Learn about topics often avoided such as colonoscopies prostate exams, and what to expect at an annual check-up. ? Hear stories about community members saved by early detection. ? Gain an understanding of how nutrition and exercise can prevent cancer and heart disease. ? Receive information on the importance of early detection screenings. ?
