Visit Loveland’s New Stewardship Plan: A Framework for Sustainable Growth
Loveland is evolving as a destination where public art, trails and local businesses draw visitors in every season. But growth without intention can strain the very qualities that make a place special. Tourism must strengthen our community, not overwhelm it.
Visit Loveland is the city’s destination marketing organization, focused on promoting Loveland as a destination worth visiting and encouraging overnight stays that support our local economy. Our role is to showcase the experiences, businesses and assets that make Loveland unique, while promoting sustainable tourism that benefits the community. To guide this growth, Visit Loveland has developed a new Stewardship Plan.
Our Stewardship Plan is built on a simple principle: if we want people to fall in love with Loveland, we must ensure Loveland thrives long after their visit. That means protecting natural and cultural resources and sustaining long-term economic benefit. When tourism is managed responsibly, it supports local businesses, sustains jobs and contributes to a strong local economy that benefits the community as a whole.
In our own operations, we prioritize local-first and environmentally responsible practices. That includes sourcing greener promotional materials, minimizing single-use items at events and choosing vendors who align with sustainability standards. These decisions may seem small individually, but collectively they signal how we intend to do business.
We also support events that reflect Loveland’s brand differentiation and encourage overnight stays rather than quick day trips. Extended visits strengthen the local economy by increasing spending at restaurants, shops and lodging properties. By promoting experiences that extend across a full weekend or multiple days, we create deeper engagement and more meaningful economic impact.
Protecting authenticity is equally important. Loveland’s $12.5 million investment in public art is not just a marketing asset. It represents decades of collaboration and community commitment.
Stewardship means honoring the integrity of that art, elevating local artists and ensuring installations are respected and maintained as part of the city’s cultural identity.
Data also plays a critical role. We use research and visitor insights to better understand travel patterns, encourage exploration across seasons and distribute visitation thoughtfully across locations. By guiding when and where people explore, we help reduce concentrated impacts while supporting businesses throughout the city.
At its core, stewardship is about balance. Visitors come to Loveland to experience the same trails, parks and gathering spaces that residents value daily. They dine in family-owned restaurants, attend local performances and engage with public art created by members of this community. Those experiences are strongest when they remain authentic and accessible.
Sustainability is often discussed in broad terms, but it comes down to everyday choices: supporting a locally owned shop instead of defaulting to a national chain; staying on designated trails to protect open space; respecting public art installations as shared cultural assets; reducing waste at community events. When those behaviors are encouraged and modeled, a pledge becomes practice.
Today's travelers want destinations that align with their values. Our Stewardship Plan signals that responsible tourism is not an afterthought in Loveland. It is integrated into how we grow.
Loveland’s identity as the Sweetheart City has always been rooted in care and connection. Stewardship is a natural extension of that spirit. Loving a place means protecting it, planning for it and inviting others to experience it responsibly.
As someone who has worked in destination marketing for more than a decade, I believe our responsibility extends beyond attracting visitors. We play a key role in shaping how tourism contributes to the community's growth. We are committed to ensuring tourism remains an asset, not a burden, and we welcome visitors to explore Loveland’s art, trails and local businesses with confidence that stewardship is woven into how we move forward, together
